The lining of the lungs, stomach, heart and other organs is called mesothelium. Mesothelioma is a cancer of that tissue. It is a rare but serious type of cancer. Usually begins in the lungs, but can begin in the abdomen or other organs. Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles. You can take a long time - 30 to 50 years - between being close to asbestos and the disease. Treatment includes surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or all three.

Mesothelioma is a relatively rare disease, but for those effected, it can alter their lives and the lives of their loved ones, drastically and irrevocably.

Although cancer is a painful condition in any way, the most tragic and unacceptable of mesothelioma is that 80% of the time it is contracted by exposure to asbestos in the environment. Yes, yes, if you or someone you know has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, which could have been due to environmental hazards.

U.S. Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) has set limits for exposure to asbestos is considered safe. However, mesothelioma patients are unaware that they are enduring the pain was caused by the negligence of those around them.

Mesothelioma Causes

The main cause of mesothelioma is asbestos, a material that is used in many different ways, until the 1970 when it was linked ultimately to the health problems it causes. Many people working in mines, factories, shipyards, and even schools have been exposed to carcinogenic material and diagnosed with mesothelioma. Due to the nature of many jobs and the fact that many women did not work for decades, it is easy to understand why more men have been diagnosed with the condition than women.

Much of the problem with mesothelioma is that it takes time for the disease is present. Many people with mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos probably twenty or thirty years ago, and by the time the cancer is too late to treat, leading to a fatal outcome. See also about cancer
